History
Drum & Bass in South Africa from the post-apartheid breakbeat trickle to a 174 BPM scene with its own roster, labels and rigs. Thirty years on, EastBound is the latest chapter in a long lineage. This is the tape.
From a London dub-plate to a Gauteng sub-floor. Thirty years on. And counting.
How it started
In the early 1990s, jungle and drum & bass were busy mutating in the UK. South Africa's electronic scene was running on kwaito and house. The fall of apartheid in 1994 and the media liberalization that followed cracked open cultural exchange — pirate-radio tapes, imported white-labels, mixtapes from cousins in London.
By 1995, Cape Town's Justin Scholtemeyer — later Animal Chin, one half of Counterstrike — flew to London to soak up the jungle scene first-hand and came home with crates of vinyl. Three years later the Counterstrike duo was operational, releasing on Moving Shadow and putting South African DnB on the world map.
What he landed inside of: Reinforced Records — Goldie, 4hero, Doc Scott — had just turned hardcore into something coherent. Goldie's Timeless dropped that same year. Two years later, Roni Size & Reprazent won the Mercury Prize with New Forms. The genre was getting legitimised in real time — and SA was getting pulled into the frame at exactly the right moment.
In Joburg, DJ A33 and others were running the underground at the same time. Two cities, same direction. The sound was being grown locally and proudly tagged home grown long before that became a club night's name.
- 1994
A new era in SA music
Media liberalization opens the floodgates. Kwaito and house already run the dancefloor. Breakbeat smuggles itself in via pirate-radio tapes and imported white-labels.
- 1995
Justin's London trip
Justin Scholtemeyer — later Animal Chin of Counterstrike — flies from Cape Town to London. Soaks up the jungle scene. Comes home with crates of vinyl and a plan.
- ~1997
Sublime · Bush Radio 89.5FM
Hyphen (Al-John) starts the Sublime Drum & Bass Show — Tuesday nights, 10pm. Twenty-plus years later, still on air. The longest-running DnB FM show in southern Africa, predating the streaming era by decades.
- 1998
Counterstrike formed
Justin Scholtemeyer (Animal Chin) and Eaton Crous (500 Mills) lock in the duo. First releases land on Rob Playford's Moving Shadow. Pioneers operational.
- late 90s
206 + Reality
Joburg's two formative breakbeat venues. 206 packs in nightly with acid jazz, jungle, drum & bass — serious enough to land a Virgin-released '206 Mix' compilation. Reality fills in the gaps. The teenage junglists who'd later spine the scene — RudeOne, SFR — cut their teeth in these rooms.
- ~2000
Transky · Carfax residency
A Joburg crew running a defining Carfax residency at the cusp of the new century — Transky DJs, Digital Nomad on funk and trip hop, R.O.M. on drum & bass. Breakbeat, funk, D&B and trip hop in one room before the genres fully separated locally.
- 2000
Homegrown opens
Cape Town's monthly DnB night launches at The Jam — later renamed Mercury Live. Masterminded by Algorythm Recordings as a once-monthly meeting point for SA's three early DnB crews — Algorythm, Sublime, Krushed & Sorted — under one roof. Counterstrike and Hyphen as residents. Runs for twelve years.
- ~2003
Niskerone · The Experiment + Phase
Mark Stevens (Niskerone) — born and raised in Mitchells Plain — starts throwing parties under The Experiment, then a weekly called Phase with SFR. UCT Radio shows. Residencies at Stones, Babbaloos, Black Sheep. The Cape Town weekly map starts to fill in.
- 2005
Algorythm Recordings
Counterstrike re-launch the label as a proper imprint. Hard, technical DnB. Releases by Current Value, Limewax, SPL, The Panacea, Sinister Souls, Receptor, Forbidden Society. The most internationally connected SA DnB label of the era — peer to Renegade Hardware and Barcode.
- 2006
It Came From The Jungle
Niskerone takes over the Thursday night at Fiction DJ Bar on Long Street, filling the gap left by the Piano Lounge closure. "A little experiment that was only meant to run for a summer or two" — twenty years later still going. SA's longest-serving weekly DnB brand. Internationals played: Noisia, Pendulum, Skrillex, Friction, Camo & Krooked, Dimension, Maduk.
- ~2008
Science Frikshun + Addictshun
RudeOne — after coming up at 206 and a stretch in London — launches Science Frikshun as Joburg's flagship international-headliner brand, with sister-night Addictshun running near-weekly at Carfax in Newtown. SF for the marquee bookings, Addictshun for the every-week local pulse. Joburg's spine, locked in.
- 2009
Counterstrike Recordings
A second imprint opens. The release pipeline doubles. Local artists get a second door.
- 2010
Dubmental · INISHI8
Ambush — also a founding member of INISHI8 — launches Dubmental. The local push to expand beyond standard DnB into dubstep and broader bass music gets its imprint home.
- 2011
Science Frikshun · Street Party
Newtown, January. Billed “the biggest Drum & Bass street party in South Africa”. Two stages, all SA DJs. Joburg now a node.
- 2012
Homegrown · 100th + final → Pressure
November 3rd: Homegrown plays its hundredth and final party. The slot doesn't go cold. SFR, Hyphen and RudeOne launch Pressure that same year — same venue (Mercury Live), same first-Saturday-of-the-month schedule. The 12-year continuity holds. Liquid early, jump-up middle, tech peak: a deliberate full-spectrum curatorial position. Same year: CTEMF debuts in Cape Town.
- 2013
Science Frikshun · vol II
January 26th. Counterstrike headlines Newtown. Thousands turn out. The bar is set for Joburg DnB events for the rest of the decade.
- 2015–18
Propaganda011 + Rubricate
Two new collectives operationalize the DIY model — all-SA compilations, vinyl pressings, digital distribution. The scene becomes a network.
- 2016
CHERCH founded
Cape Town. A new brand starts what will become the most consistent international-booking DnB run of the 2020s — District, Sognage, ten-year touring catalogue building toward Buunshin, Serum, Ekko & Sidetrack, Circadian.
- 2017
Donny Basco & Friends
Donny launches DBF — the umbrella brand around himself and a rotating cast of resident DJs. Carfax-era flagships (incl. a Far Too Loud booking), Coalescence at Madison Avenue, plus Rumbling Riddim on The Grind Radio. Halftime, rolling, jungle inflections. The second-generation Joburg spine starts to form alongside SF/Addictshun.
- 2018
Niskerone · In Transit
A debut album, European tours. Homegrown's most international export delivers proof that the local pipeline works.
- 2019
Onyx · for the outliers
Stay-C (René King) founds Onyx in Johannesburg. A platform for the next generation of SA DnB.
- 2020
Stay-C · Hospital Records WIDnB
Stay-C wins Hospital Records' Women in Drum & Bass mentorship. Around the same time, Dopplershift signs to Monk Audio. The international ladder is real for SA producers.
- 2020
COVID · the scene goes online
Clubs close. The scene pivots to broadcast. Niskerone runs livestreams from And Club. Arc Radio absorbs the calendar — The Sauce (Donny), Psychedelicacy / Arc Angels, Bass Communion Radio, Kiefke / Kudoef. A generation of DJs learns production, mixing for camera and audience-building outside the club.
- 2021
DBF · Lucidity virtual rave
DBF in lockdown form. Twice-weekly livestreams, visuals by Mustard Interactive — engineered as a virtual rave, not a webcam DJ. Rolling basslines, dancefloor bangers, sprinkles of jungle. The pandemic doesn't shut Donny's brand down — it forces it to evolve.
- 2022
Sola Vida + Pressure returns
Donny launches Sola Vida — Sunday session at Jo'Anna Melt Bar in Melville. "Palatable Drum & Bass Blends". The daytime / liquid arm of his brand portfolio. Same year, March 12: Pressure plays its first post-lockdown event at Evol on Hope Street. "Get back to basics. The music. The people."
- 2023Feb
Sanctuary DnB
"Fun. Fresh. Familiar. A Home for Drum & Bass." Joburg's post-COVID rebuild gets a new weekly home, alongside a younger generation of DJs needing somewhere to play.
- 2023
Liminil DnB
Cape Town. A collective dedicated to minimal DnB — a niche the SA scene hadn't formalised. Eight volumes deep within two years.
- 2020s
The Chaotics
A new generation. CHAOS! parties fuse DnB with gqom, Jersey club, hyperpop. Genre is loose. Energy is non-negotiable.
- ~2020s
The local circuit
Bass Communion (Stackles, JHB) and Awakened (Rogue, JHB East Rand — three shows over three years) hold the smaller Joburg rooms. Konflkt Bass (Osiris) keeps Durban on the map. The scene's not just festivals — it's a working circuit.
- 2024
A cohort moment
Inside twelve months: As Above, So Below run their first anonymous warehouse rave (CPT, January). Liquicity lands in Cape Town for the first time (February — co-promoted with ICFTJ + Science Frikshun at The Ostrich). The Konklave — Morris and Nantes Aucamp (Kr3ature) — launch SA's first three-day DnB + techno festival in Gauteng with a dedicated neurofunk identity and its own record label. Onyx, Frog Town and Cataclysm hold steady.
- 2025
Liquid Sundays · RudeOne + Hyphen
Two Homegrown alumni — RudeOne and Hyphen — open Liquid Sundays in Cape Town. A counterweight to the heavier Saturday warehouse circuit: softer, slower-burn, melodic. The CT Sunday is now a thing.
- 2025Aug
EastBound · founded + first six shows
August 2025: GG's concept — six months in the making — opens its doors with Keedz and Taine (Debug). Three founders, one platform, one standard. The launch run, end to end: 01 — Inception, 23 Aug 2025, Casa Greenery (the blueprint). 02 — Halloween, 31 Oct 2025, Carfax (heavier production, bigger room). 03 — 360, 21 Nov 2025, Casa Greenery (Glitch and Magz on the headline — local heavyweights both — with Cazza supplying and configing the 360 sound rig). 04 — NYE, 31 Dec 2025, Johannesburg (the year-closer). 05 — Cape Town debut at Club Paradise (the provincial-line crossing). 06 — Secret Show at Trenchtown, Observatory CPT (Bliss, Trifekta, Debug, GG, Keedz — unannounced lineup, small-room intent). Six flags planted across two cities. EastBound now reads as part of the SA DnB calendar.
- 2025Late
Synthesis × EastBound · first link-up
Carfax, Newtown. Trifekta's Synthesis runs the night; EastBound takes the drum & bass floor. Nothing grander than that on paper, but it's where the partnership starts.
- 2026Jan
10 Years of CHERCH
January. Circadian headlines a decade-marker for one of SA DnB's most consistent brands — proof that running a serious DnB platform in this country is now a long game, not a moment.
- 202607 Mar
HighThere · Berlin walks in
EastBound's first international booking. HighThere flies in from Berlin — Hanzom Music, heavy rollers and jump-up edge, the BERLIN IST DNB stamp. The narrative beat: HighThere is one of resident Debug's stated influences. The platform that books him is now booking the artists Debug grew up listening to. The circuit just walked through our door.
- 202628 Mar
Synthesis × EastBound II · cross-scene night
Joburg DnB and techno share a flyer. Synthesis — Trifekta's techno brand (alongside her Zynk Movement project) — twins up with EastBound across two venues: Carfax in Newtown and Bad Manors in Illovo. ~280 through the door. The DnB room: Format and Tarryntino (Bass Safari) on the close; CMS-19 (System of Synergy) holding the earlier headline slot; Rogue (Awakened), Donny Basco, .RAR, the rest of System of Synergy, Debug, Duology, Trifekta and TAKE DRVGGS (Smoking Kills, Melville) filling the rest. Two scenes that usually run on parallel tracks share a Saturday.
- 202626 Jun
EastBound × DBAF · co-headline
Friday 26 June — Smoking Kills, Melville. DBAF (Donny Basco and Friends) and EastBound co-headlined the Winter Rave on a shared bill.
- 202603 Jul
Tiny Trance × EastBound
Friday 3 July — Graceland Pub. Tiny Trance teamed up with EastBound. Two frequencies, one world: a night of dedicated four-on-the-floor alongside the new-blood Drum & Bass roster.
- 202621 Aug
Holy Rollers · one year
Friday 21 August — Cool Runnings, Boksburg. EastBound's one-year anniversary. The billing: Neptune, Rogue B2B Scotty Knowz, Trifekta B2B Antimatter, Duology, Radikill B2B Donny Basco, and the founders, Debug B2B GG.
Not the first heads here. Just the latest carrying the thread.
What we took
The monthly ethos
A residency is a promise. Same room, same crowd, same standard, twelve months a year. Not a one-off, not a side-room.
A platform built by artists
If the labels won't pick up local artists, the artists become the label. Release, distribute, master, repeat.
A whole night for the music
DnB doesn't share the bill with eight other genres. The room belongs to 174 BPM from doors to lights.
What is DnB?
Drum & Bass runs at 160–180 BPM. Breakbeat percussion on top, a sub-frequency bassline underneath, and whatever the producer can fit between. It splintered out of UK jungle in the mid-90s and has been mutating ever since — every five years another room of the house gets built.
What follows is a working lexicon. Twelve named families, grouped by use. Most rooms run two or three at once; a good DJ moves between them. The names below show up across the rest of this page — on residents' release sheets, in event lineups, in the way bookings get described.
Core families
The dancefloor backbone. What most rooms run — what fills festival stages.
- Liquid
- Atmosphere and melody. House, jazz and soul DNA over old jungle breaks.
- Neuro
- Heavy, filtered basslines. Sound-design first, dancefloor second.
- Jump Up
- Catchy, often screeching basslines. Simple by design. Sometimes pushes 180 BPM.
- Jungle
- Slower tempos, rhythm-led, breakbeat-driven. The precursor.
- Dancefloor
- Club-first, polished, predictable. Doesn't quite fit the other families — the most mainstream-sounding cut.
Technical & dark
System music. Sub-bass and sound-design over crowd-pleasing.
- Techstep
- Old and largely forgotten. Techno-influenced, pauses between hi-hats, raw. Precursor to neuro and deep.
- Deep / Minimal
- Low basslines. Cold, synthetic, industrial-feeling. Less is the point.
- Halftime
- DnB drum patterns that feel like ~85 BPM instead of 170. Umbrella term — styles vary wildly between artists.
- Hardcore / Crossbreed
- Hardcore-techno kicks at DnB tempo. Distorted, fast, blunt.
Texture & fringe
The edges. Outliers, hybrids, scene-specific imports.
- Atmospheric / Intelligent
- The mature, less aggressive side of jungle. Sophisticated, soundscape-led — Liquid's older cousin.
- Breakcore
- Jungle pushed past 200 BPM. Frenetic, abstract, doesn't take itself seriously.
- Drumstep
- 2010-era brostep at DnB tempo. Wobble drops with the breakbeat underneath.
- Reggae / Ragga
- Reggae vocals and samples up front. The sound-system arm.
- Sambass
- DnB cut with samba and bossa nova. Brazilian export.
UK Garage & cousins
DnB and UK Garage aren't parallel — they share a parent. Both came out of London's early-90s breakbeat-hardcore continuum. Both were incubated by the same pirate-radio network — Kool FM, Rinse, Déjà Vu. The split was tempo and sensibility. Jungle / DnB went up to 160–180 BPM and kept the chopped breaks. UKG came in through pitched-up house records at ~130. Same buildings, different rooms — and now, four scenes deep, the trees are touching again.
The UKG family
- Speed Garage
- DJ EZ pitching up Todd Edwards garage-house cuts to ~130 BPM in 1994 to keep them close to jungle's energy. The first split.
- 4×4 / Bassline
- Sheffield's Niche club, early 2000s. Vocals stripped, sub-bass pumped up, modulated wobble as the lead. Currently mid-revival.
- 2-Step
- 1998–99. Broken kick patterns instead of straight 4/4. The dominant UKG sound at the genre's commercial peak.
- Grime
- East London, ~2002. 8-bar verses, sublow basslines, MC-led. The "what do you call it" generation — eskibeat, sublow, nu shape, then grime stuck.
- Dubstep
- Croydon, ~2002. Big Apple Records on Surrey Street, FWD>> at Plastic People, DMZ at Brixton Mass. Sub-bass over 2-step drums.
- UK Funky
- 2008+. UKG rhythms with African and Latin percussion. The bridge to the amapiano and Afrobeats wave that came after.
Sammy Virji, Interplanetary Criminal, Hamdi, MPH, PinkPantheress, Sherelle. The current wave moves between speed garage, bassline, jungle, DnB and grime in single sets. PinkPantheress took British Producer of the Year at the 2026 Brit Awards. The two trees are merging again.
Where the trees touch
- 01Two-step ≠ 2-Step
DnB's late-90s techstep used 'two-step' to mean broken kick patterns. UKG arrived at the same name independently a year later. Same word, different trees, both right.
- 02Halftime ↔ Grime
Halftime DnB drums feel like ~85 BPM. Grime sits at 140. The perceived tempo lines up — producers like Om Unit, Sam Binga and Kid Drama move freely between them.
- 03Drumstep ↔ Dubstep
Both emerged around 2010 from the same wobble-bass aesthetic. Same drop language, different tempos.
- 04Burial · Untrue (2007)
Sat between dubstep, 2-step and ambient jungle. The post-dubstep moment that proved both trees still spoke the same language.
- 05NUKG · 2024 →
The current revival is a full re-merger. Sammy Virji, Interplanetary Criminal, Hamdi, MPH, PinkPantheress, Sherelle — UKG, speed garage, bassline, jungle, DnB and grime in single sets.
